Finally got round to setting up a flickr account. Not a huge amount on there so far - just the photos I took one very busy lunchtime when the Millennium Bridge was being lowered into place.

Installing Chromium OS on a Dell Mini 9

I've had my Dell Mini 9 for 3 or 4 years now. It came installed with Ubuntu 8.10 and I've upgraded it every April and October ever since. This has been mostly fine (apart from the occasional WiFi glitch) until recently. I have been running Ubuntu 12.04 LTS since April, but recently system updates have been causing problems and last week I just couldn't get it to update properly at all. So, I thought I could either revert to Ubuntu 11.10, or try something else. As a Google Chrome user, I thought it might be interesting to take a look at Chrome OS, which the Dell team had conveniently ported for the Mini 9. It took far longer to install than expected due to a small but significant error in the installation. This led to a trawl of the interwebs for a fix. Here I present my mashup of useful information (with references at the end). If it doesn't work for you, please let me know and I'll investigate. Film: The Iron Giant

I missed this film first time round, and having watched it this afternoon I'm wondering why. A simple story about a robot (both iron and giant) arriving on earth and befriending a young boy. Stories and rumours start to fly around, especially when cars and other metal objects appear to have large bite marks out of them. In a similar fashion to ET, the government arrives to get to the bottom of things. Once the cause of these occurrences has been identified, the army arrives en-masse and reverts to a fairly typical approach: we don't know what it is, so let's smash it. I won't go into details of the final stages of the story, but of course everything turns out pretty well in the end. As a non-Japanese animated feature people may dismiss this film as one for the kids, but this would be a mistake. It's a wonderful, heart-warming film. References: The Iron Giant on IMDB

Film: Spring, Summer, Autumn, Winter And Spring

Slow paced Korean number, this one. Atmospheric and very scenic. It follows the life of a man, from childhood to middle age, as he lives and studies with his Buddhist master on a floating temple. It shows how his life goes awry after a young woman arrives and how he gets back on the straight and narrow. As with all excellent films this has a bit of everything including some very Asian humour - retrieving a stray boat by the use of a chicken, and writing calligraphy using a cat - and, of course, a dose of tragedy. Nicely illustrates how life has a habit of repeating itself as hinted at in the title. So, Korean cinema isn't always action and horror. This is a film well worth seeing if you fancy something a little slower.
